335 miles, from South Dakota to North Dakota, but to be able to add 2 more states we took a little western detour on our detour. Backroads, wide prairies, and fields all covered with the beige winter look filled our drive. And eventually we found a very vintage gas station!
Devils Tower National Monument
The reason I added this to our trip was (A) to have a stop in Wyoming and (B) because I grew up with “Close Encounters o the Third Kind” and was looking forward to some aliens. The aliens did disappoint, but the enthusiasm my environmentalist got with seeing and reading about this monument made it all worth the drive.
Backroads to North Dakota
To end up in this pub in North Dakota we took more backroads. The once you see in the movies with no houses, only prairie, an occasional semi and 7 bald eagles near the road. The gas station was in a tiny little town and luckily someone explained to us how to fuel gas with this antique pump system. To mark this day we added the song “Flyover States” to our list, because we totally see where they get the name, but both of us did feel the charm of the desolate landscape.
