So this road trip we planned around Mount Rushmore, and you actually never get there by accident. So today and tomorrow we will cover a lot of miles, with just a few fun photo-ops and curiosities along the way. We do want to get to our destination, but in road-trip-style. Our plan for today is to get halfway through Kansas, covering about 560 miles, it is a driving day, but even those could be fun. However, the weather is not cooperating, rain and dropping temperatures…. we were hitting snow by the evening.
Fort Worth Water Gardens.
3 hours North of College Station, in Fort Worth, are those water gardens, worth to stop and see. It was raining, and kind of cold, but we were not disappointed. They actually have the waterfall garden designed where you can walk into…. an amazing way to start this adventure.
Spider Bug-Wilson VW Auto
A quick photo-op in Oklahoma. We had to drive of the highway and back on the next exit, so it was a cool stop, still raining and with construction work, we couldn’t get close.
There is a farm that build a sculpture of a Spider bug, why would you miss the opportunity to stop here.
We drove the rest of the evening towards Newton, KS. Planning on a nice dinner at the Cracker Barrel (at least once per road trip), to make the usual fire place picture and enjoying a warm meal in the cold weather.
The Keeper of the Plains
Where de little Arkansas and the Arkansas river meet is a tall sculpture of the Keeper of the Plains. Unfortunately it closes at night except on Thursday when there is a ring of fire and the fire pits around the statue are lit. Today is not Thursday and it is cold and drizzling, so we can’t get good pictures. If I ever make it back to Witchita I define want to learn more.
